Publish to Groups

publish_to_groups was a Meta Graph API permission that let third-party apps post to Facebook groups until Meta removed it in April 2024.

publish_to_groups was the official OAuth permission cloud tools like Buffer and Hootsuite used to schedule posts into member groups. Meta revoked it for typical marketing apps in April 2024.

What changed

After removal, cloud schedulers could still post to Facebook Pages but not groups you joined as a member. Group marketers moved to browser-session posting tools like MaherPost.

Why marketers care

If your playbook still assumes publish_to_groups works, your stack is broken silently. Page posts and group posts are different channels. Rebuild on tools honest about the 2024 cutoff or waste another quarter wondering why reach vanished. Verify before you renew annual contracts on legacy schedulers. Ask your vendor to demo a live group post in a member community, not on a Page. If they refuse, you already have your answer about publish_to_groups.

Common mistakes

  • Buying “API group posting” without verifying OAuth scopes
  • Confusing Page publish permissions with member group access
  • Never migrating queues after Buffer or Hootsuite group features died
  • Believing a LinkedIn post about “API access restored” without checking Meta docs

Example in practice

An agency runs 2023 Buffer group queues for twelve clients. In 2026 campaigns show scheduled but never appear in member groups. Support confirms group member publishing via API is not available for their app tier. They migrate to MaherPost with spintax, warmup mode, and delivery logs. First week volume is lower. Second week delivery logs prove real group visibility again. Client churn from “invisible posting” stops once logs show per-group proof.

In MaherPost

MaherPost never depended on publish_to_groups for core workflows. Joined group campaigns run through chrome extension poster sessions at $37/mo. You get composer, delays, health scoring, and logs built for the post-API era. No fake “official API” badge on the homepage. Migration hurts once. Running dead queues hurts every week. MaherPost onboarding focuses on bundles, spintax, and logs so ex-API users rebuild on proof, not hope.
